Binge drinking causes insulin resistance

binge drinking causes insulin resistance

Researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine discovered that alcohol inflames the hypothalamus, disrupting insulin signaling and impairing glucose tolerance (insulin resistance).

The study found rats were insulin resistant for up to 54 hours after their last dose of alcohol.

Insulin resistance (and therefore high blood insulin levels) is a key factor in developing type 2 diabetes, coronary artery disease and stroke.

It was previously unclear whether binge drinking on its own could increase the risk of diabetes 2 or whether it led to overeating which was then a risk factor.
