Another one of those – “sounds like a logical thing to do” ideas. The concept – that botox injections would delay gastric emptying, make people feel fuller and more satisfied and therefore enable weight loss.
Researchers tested out the theory on 60 mild to moderately obese people over a 16 week period and found:
- gastric emptying was slowed
- this did not translate to increased fullness or satisfaction
- the injections did not lead to weight loss
- that educating obese patients about how full their stomachs actually were (feelings of fullness) could be a better approach to control overeating
