So we have all been told that low doses of aspirin to prevent heart attack and stroke. Now new research from Australia has found regular aspirin users are more than twice as likely to develop a type of macular degeneration.
Last year a European study came to a similar conclusion, while 2 previous studies found no connection.
The researchers speculate that aspirin might overstimulate part of the immune system in people with a particular gene, although other users without the gene also had the problem.
The Australian study followed more than 2,000 older adults over 15 years. There has been criticism of the study with the recommendation that people should continue taking aspirin if recommended, but get regular eye exams.
